Confederate soldier’s 4pp. letter signed by John. W. Lewis who was Capt., A. A. G. to Gen. Holmes, September 16, 1862; Capt., A. A. G. to Maj. Gen. T. O. Hindman, March 4, 1863; A. A. G., to E. K. Smith, June 27, 1863 ; with Sterling Price, 1864. Datelined Camp near Bunker Hill, October 25, 1862, written to his fathet. In part, “I was in all the last battles, at Manassas for five days, at Harper’s Ferry and at Sharpsburg. But thank God I escaped without a scratch. We had some terrific fighting. ... at the places we fought and whipped at least four to one. I never saw such slaughter. Advanced on them all the time and charged them three times.... We were down near Harper’s Ferry all week tearing up the Baltimore & Ohio RR. We destroyed about 25 miles. ... Col. Baldwin wrote me last month saying I had been promoted and assigned duty on some General’s staff in Ark. ... Father, as horses are now very high .. I think it advisable that you should sell any you may have to spare ... There is my Red Wing will bring $1000 or maybe $750. .... In case anything should happen to me, you will find all my land certificates in the hands of Mr. William Woodruff of Little Rock. ....”
