Charles Eliphalet Walbridgeon January 3, 1862, was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. into H Company, NY 100th Infantry. He rose in the ranks to Lt. Colone l7/8/1865. The Union officer’s 3pp letter is signed “Charles”, dateline St. Helena Island, March 5, 1863. In part, “I have just heard the news which makes me almost sick, it is that General Naglee is going to leave us. He has been relieved at his own request and will start for Washington in the morning. It is result of this miserable, childish infernal quarrel between Hunter and Foster. To think such a man as Naglee being sacrificed to the contemptible schemes of Hunter. It makes me perfectly dusgusted. The Union army freed 10,000 Black people on St. Helena during their occupation. ...” One of the brigadiers, General Stevenson, openly proclaimed that he and his command would not fight beside "niggers," for which General Hunter had him arrested and confined. General Naglee, another brigadier, was also removed from command later on and sent North for manifesting a similar spirit of insubordination.
