Union Officer’s 2pp. letter with personalized cover, to Charles Gilpin (former Mayor of Phila), by Albert Magilton who was commissioned 6/21/1861 into PA 31st and was promoted Colonel 10/4/1861, resigned 12/23/1862.The letter is datelined Head Quarters 2nd Brigade P Rve, Harrison’s landing Va, July 6, 1862. In large part, “I have to inform you that Acting Lieut. Col. Richard H. Woolworth of the 4th Regt. P. Rve was wounded on the 30th of June 1862; not dangerously but painfully in the fleshy front of the thigh. That he was put in the hospital among the wounded; and that the enemy drove us beyond it, and the wounded were captured and taken charge of by the Rebels.” On June 30, three Confederate divisions converged on the retreating Union army near the crossroads at Glendale. Maj. Gens. James Longstreet and A. P. Hill penetrated the Federal defenses, routing the Pennsylvania Reserve division and other brigades near the Frayser farm.Woolworth would be exchanged for Maj S. K. Hays CS Army. However he was KIA on 5/9/1864 at Cloyd's Mountain, VA.
