A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp., 4to., written by Pvt. Caleb Aber, Co. A. 73rd New York Vols., "Camp near Harrison's Landing," [Va.], Aug. 15, 1862, to his father, reading, in part: "- the captain and lieutenant dont see to nothing -then to playing cards all the time - there is thousands of our men sick and dying - on account of bad water and heat - we have been under marching orders for 4 days. We packed up our knapsacks and the wagons took them down to the landing and put them on board of 'cannall' boats - got Negroes to work on them and after starting down the river, they all sunk down - everything that I have got is spoilt. That will cost me - 15 dollars - the 'doctors' has been sending some of the sick off. I don't go to him. He will poison you. Our officers don't look to nothing - our 'doctor' put a man and pronounced him able for duty that fell dead on his post. He was on guard - your 'affectionate sun' - Caleb Aber." Overall VG
