Union soldier’s 4pp pencil letter, signed only by “Albery on regimental stationary "Head Quarters 13th Regt. Rifles M[assachusetts] V., Co. C. Datelined , Warrenton Junction VA., May 2, 1862, writing to his cousin Hannah. In part, “Have been on Picket twice and camp guard once ... We have had so much rain we have not drilled much .. . I think we will have peace before another year. ... I think all the fighting will be done within the next three months. ... They would not have let us alone in peace. They would not have been satisfied to stay in their own states. If they had gained one point, they would try and gain another till at last we should have had to submit. ... or fight. We chose the latter before it was to late ... no price is too dear to pay for the preservation of our Liberty and Union. Our forefathers gave their lives to establish it ....”
