Union soldier’s 4pp letter with original cover to Canada, written by William J. Hargraves who on 8/6/1862, he mustered into "C" Co. Massachusetts 33rd Infantry and transferred out on 8/14/1863 at Washington, DC. Datelined; U.S. Hospital, Phila., October 26 ‘62 , in part “I am much better than when I wrote last, and my surgeon thinks he will be able to bring me about ere long. ... I dred spending another winter in camp. It is more fatal to men than the battlefield. ... England will never interfere in this affair unless suffering humanity demands it. ... We have just received in the Phila Hospitals quite a large number of the wounded of Antietam. Some of them are shockingly cut up. There a a very large numbers of amputated legs & arms among them. If this war lasts another year, half the nation will be crippled
