Union civilian 2pp letter on Fairmont Iron Works letterhead written by "E. W. Coit". Datelined: Philadelphia, Sept. 12, 1862,to “My Lord” in part “ I regret you are not as well as usual. Do you put yourself in in the way of recoveringf your former vigor by total rest.Pray do not neglect yourself. Let your ‘bleeding country’ take care of itself awhile and don’t bother with it. In my opinion, we will all be in hell in six months unless a change soon takes place. ... Owing to the fortitude of the Rebels some of our timid citizens are devilish uncomfortable to say the least. Much excitement prevails in town - the Gov. made a demand for 20,000 men from the city... and they say that tomorrow martial law will be declared. ... Seems to me that if the rebels cross the Susqushannah River river, the only thing we can do will be to use the same ingenuity the woman did to prevent a ‘rape’ - Cave In in order to save our lives. There is certainly something most monstrously rotten about the conduct of this war ....”
