A good pair of Union soldier's war-date letters, totaling seven pages, both written on 8vo., patriotic stationery in early 1863 by Pvt. Howard T. Conant, Co. D, 23rd Maine Vols. The first letter is written on an American Eagle patriotic stationery, "Edwards Ferry, Md., Camp of the 23rd Me. regt., Jan. 26, 1863," reading, in part: "- you wanted to know who that was that wrote that piece in the Advocate. I do not for thare was so many that went and stole turkeys and had them cooked- there was some of the boys [who] went to a house since we came here and asked a man if he had any chickens. He told them that he had. They told him to get a light and go out to the barn so he did and they took all of his chickens and went off with them. He is said to be a rebel. I went out to a hill - and I saw Balls Bluff whare the rebels drove our folks into the [Potomac] river and it bad to think how they used them; but I am in hopes that this war will be closed soon - Howard T. Conant." Conant's second letter was written from "Camp Grover, Great Falls, Montgomery County, Md., Jan. 4, 1863," concerning the disposition of his command along the Potomac river. This letter was also composed on patriotic stationery. This time of Lady Liberty with and an American flag proudly waving in the breeze. Minor spotting, else VG.
