Union soldier’s 3pp letter, with the original regimental printed cover for the Fourth NH Volunteers, written to his mother by Corp. James O. Sanborn who on 9/18/1861, mustered into "I" Co. New Hampshire 4th Infantry. He died of disease on 11/12/1863 at Hilton Head, SC. Datelined Camp of 4th Reg. N.H. Vols, Beaufort SC. March 8, 1863, in part, “There is a large Expedittion ..I think it is destined for Charleston or Savannah and perhaps both. Our regiment is ordered to go. ... And there is a large naval fleet going with us. There are eight Monitors in the harbor. I think that Genl Hunter will have about 10,000 and Genl. Foster about 15,000 ... The time has arrived for the the 10th Army Corp to distinguish themselves among the brave Armies of America. We have laid still long enough, now come what may ... we fight for Union and Constitution ... looks like a great forward movement - and I hope that we may soon end this cured Rebellion. ... The next time you hear from me you may find me in Savannah ....”
