Union soldier’s 4pp pencil letter was written by Albert H. Carter who on 8/27/1862, he mustered into "A" Co. Massachusetts 36th Infantry and was Killed on 5/6/1864 at Wilderness, VA. Datelined Crab Orchard (KY), Sept. 9th/’63, in part “There is talk about our going on to B.Side (Burnside) but I have not gone yet. ... I was one that was picked out to go and the Lt. said my name was sent to B.Side as one to go. ... The ague has got hold of a great many of the boys ... it shakes the flesh right off of some. ... Two of our company died back at N. Ville since we came here. There was a sergeant from Fitchburg and a Corporal from Leominster .. ....”
