Union Civilian, well written 4pp. letter, written by C.M. Heams, written to (mjr) Richard (Somers Smith) who was commissioned into Field & Staff US Regular Army 12th Infantry May 14, 1861 in the Army. Datelined Portland, Feby 26th, 1863, in part “Tuesday 16th of Feby .. evening Mr. J.B.Gough lectured ... Many of the people of Portland regret exceedingly .. did not have the privilege of receiving .. the brave and generous McClellan, a man whose noble virtues shine brightly ... you may count me as one of the ardent admirers of Gen. McClellan .. he may yet again be placed at the head of the Army. ... I hope your Head Quarters when completed may be all that you desire ... The anniversary of the birth day of him who was ‘first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his country men’ was celebrated on Monday. .. Oh that a second Washington might arise whose mission it should be to end this contest by a glorious victory. ... Elestus S. Woonmell made application for Invalid Pension. He was color Sergt of the old 5th and wounded at the battle of Gains Mill .. a gunshot wound in the left arm .. causing a fracture of the bone and paralysis of the arm ...”John B. Gough (1817-1886) was an international celebrity during his own lifetime. He was a temperance reformer and lecturer who delivered some 9,000 lectures to more than nine million people throughout the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Canada, France, and Switzerland. Major Richard Somers Smith, of the United States army, was chosen to President of Gerard College. Major Smith was inaugurated June 24, 1863, and resigned in September, 1867
