Captain Richard Worsam Meade II (21 May 1807 – 16 April 1870) was an American naval officer. He was also called Richard Worsam Meade, Sr. His younger brother was Major General George G. Meade. He commanded the receiving ship USS North Carolina (an old ship-of-the-line) at New York City until 1864. was promoted to lieutenant-commander on July 16, 1862. His subsequent Civil War service was distinguished, and included participation in the suppression of the July 1863 New York Draft Riots, as well as active combat and blockade enforcement work while commanding the Mississippi River ironclad Louisville in the latter part of 1862, and the gunboat Marblehead in South Carolina waters in 1863-1864.Autograph Letter Signed “R.M. In large part, I am constrained by pressing influence of Thurlow Weed, Wm. B. Astor, J.J. Astor and a host of other equal high social standing .... But when you read the accompaning letter signed by Mr. Beare agent to Wm. B. Astor I have no doubt but you will pardon the intrusion. ... I fully concur with the feeling manifested by those gentlemen ...”
