Union soldier’s 2pp. letter with poem written by George W. Jones was barely 17 years old when he enlisted in Co. F, 26th Missouri Infantry with four older brothers. He was discharged for disability at Farmington, Mississippi, in May 1862. Georgedecided to reenlist in Co, M, 10th Missouri Cavalry in 1863. He was wounded while with General A. J. Smith, had three horses killed under him at the Battle of Big Blue in Missouri, and received a slight would while charging the rebel lines. It was while attempting to shoot down General Marmaduke that George had a horse shot from under him and was wounded. For treatment of his wounds, he was sent to Fort Leavenworth where he died in 1864.Datelined: Clear Creek, Mississippi, February 22, 1864 to his sister Rosania, in part “We are in the 10th Missouri Cavalry. We are in a good home here. I would be glad to get a few lines from you. I will send you some songs. You must write. ... He continues with a 3 stanza poem, in part “With tearful eyes I look around, Life seems a dark and stormy sea, Yet midst the gloom I hear a sound, A Heavenly whisper, come to me.....”
