Union Soldier’s 2-1/2pp letter written by L.F. Russell on “Head Quarters Second U.S. Volunteer Infantry” to his mother. Datelined: April 12, 1865, after the family news, the writer continues in part, “Long before you get this and even now, I suppose you have all the particulars of the beginning of the end of the rebellion. To night there is to be in this town and Portmouth - a grand illumination and torch light procession. Yesterday it was one continuous firing of cannon and all but the the Secession sympathizers were very happy. The sudden collapse of the rebellion may affect me for it is possible they will not want soldiers to any great extent and may muster us out of service .....”
