Francis Fessenden (1839-1906) Union general. As captain wounded in the arm at Shiloh, as general lost his right leg at Monett’s Bluff. Later a member of Wirtz’s Military trial and an assistant commander of Bureau of Refugees and Freedmen. Autograph Letter Signed, “Francis Fessenden, Brig & Brvt Major General, US. Army,”, written to Mr. Belmont Perry, 1pp., Portland Maine, December 17, 1879. In large part “I do not know whether General Keyes is living. His name is not on the Army Register. ... I was placed on retired list of the Army on account of wound which incapacitated me from active duty, I have not kept up my knowledge of officers movements.” Actually Keyes was alive, Erasmus Darwin Keyes (1810-1895)
