Schuyler Hamilton (1822-1903) was an American soldier, farmer, engineer, and a grandson of Alexander Hamilton. In 1863 he was compelled to resign, due to a prolonged illness. President Lincoln, with whom he had maintained a correspondence during the war, regretfully accepted the resignation.Autograph Letter Signed “Schuyler Hamilton, Major Gen’l” 1pp., on illustrated Park Avenue Hotel letterhead. Datelined: New York, May 15, 1889, in large part “Enclosed please find Stories of President Lincoln I spoke to you about. You will be sure to return them ...” The letter is fine and tipped to large album sheet, old school style.Abraham Lincoln and Schuyler Hamilton were not directly related, but Schuyler Hamilton was the grandson of Alexander Hamilton, and through family connections, there was a historical link between them, with Schuyler Hamilton even maintaining correspondence with President Lincoln during the Civil War period; essentially, Lincoln was connected to the Hamilton family through a distant relative like Schuyler Hamilton.
