Grenville Mellen Dodge (1831-1916) was a Union Army officer on the frontier and a pioneering figure in military intelligence during the Civil War, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's intelligence chief in the Western Theater. He served in several notable assignments, including command of the XVI Corps during the Atlanta Campaign. Typed Letter Signed “G.M. Dodge” as President, on “Society of the Army of the Tennessee” letterhead with a stunning gold embossed eagle, written to General James Grant Wilson. Datelined: New York, March 2, 1901, in small part, “.. circular notifying our members of the unveiling of the statue of Major-General John A. Logan ay Washington April the 9th. ....” The letter is fine and tipped to large album sheet, old school style.The monument was formally dedicated on April 9, 1901. Temporary platforms for invited and distinguished guests were built near the base. Guests included President William McKinley, members of his cabinet.
