Manuscript Document Signed, 1pp. folio, Rowan County, North Carolina, September 20, 1777, and reads in part: “...Whereas on the 2d day of September inst. a State warrant was issued by James Smith, Esqr for apprehending and taking Luke Carroll and Benj’n. Carroll both of said County, being charged upon the Oath of Edward DeCruale for having passed & counterfeited the curr’cy of this state & being the currency endebted by Congress, and That said Edwd Decruale & John Garrison were especially appointed to execute said Warrant - That in consequence of their appointment - John Garrison in company wth said DeCruale apprehended & took said Luke Carroll in custody and kept him at Carroll’s house a night. The next morning said John Garrison, Edwd DeCrual, & Thomas Terrall, who assisted to guard the prisoner, Luke Carroll proposed setting out for Salisbury with said Carroll, but Edward DeCruale seemed to object against their starting out...He intended to give him Carroll an opportunity of making his escape & extort money from said Carroll. Accordingly that morning said Luke Carroll did make his escape & break custody, immediatly after said Carroll’s making his escape, Thomas Terrall met DeCruale at the door which carrol went out at, and asked DeCruale where Carroll was. He replied he thought he was in bed with his wife, but they found Carroll was gone...” About good condition.
