Boldly penned two page letter by “G.Dench” from Phila. Jan. 31, 1795 with back sheet acting as cover and addressed to “the Honorable, the Delegates of Massachusetts.” It appears the writer personally traveled to Phila. (then seat of U.S. Congress) to bring his case before that committee, and while still in Phila. thanks them for their “…attention to my case and believe me that ingratitude has no place in my mind. As to the turn my case had in Congress the other day, was as unforeseen and as incontrived by me as my Death Day. The facts are these…[he explains how he presented his papers before the committee but given very short shrift because of others ahead of him]…and as I thought most of you gentlemen was [sic] of opinion that this was the only best way for me to obtain something [explains his actions]…although my claim was on Congress and nowhere else…I don’t say I have not said hard things of some legislators of Mass. and of the present one as to their ingratitude towards you and me [offering a half-hearted apology for their] friendship to me as well as your great concern for the public good [ends with a complaint that his case and his documents were not being heard or read].” Usual light aging. Very minor faint damp stain, but exc. (This very likely is the same G. Dench who served as an officer in the Massachusetts Militia during the Rev. War. Research might bring up much more about his case and complaint.).
