Samuel and William Vernon sons of the famous silversmith, were notorious slave traders from Newport, Rhode Island. The Vernon's were also partners with Henry Laurens one of the most interesting slave traders in Charleston, South Carolina during the 1750's. It was during this time period that William Vernon was reported of buying slaves in Africa at the rate of 115 gallons of rum a man and ninety-five gallons for a woman. This partly-printed shipping document for the Vernons’, 1p. oblong, Newport, January 29, 1750, reads “Shipped by the Grace of God, in good Order and well Condition’d by Samuel and William Vernon in and upon the good ship called the Newport Packet whereof is Mastter, under God, for this present Voyage William Richards and now riding at Anchor in the Harbour of Newport and by God’s Grace bound for London to Say Twelve Tons of unchiped Logwood...” Signed by Richards. Fold splits, with loss at center fold intersection. Good.
