Autograph Letter Signed, “Andrew Shormard” 1p. quarto, New York, July 15, 1813, addressed to David Gelston, and reads in part: “...Permit me Sir through the Post Office of enquiring of you if it be lawful after a vessel has cleared at the Custon house, for a Port in the West Indies, and on her arrival there to Purchase Slaves and carry them to the Havana and there dispose of them and then return and reside in the United States, the parties concerned being all citizens of the United States...” VG. David Gelston was the Collector for the Port of New York from 1801 through 1820.
