Manuscript Document Signed, “Solomon Porter” 1p. folio, Shelby County, Tennessee, and reads in part: “....The Petition of Solomon Porter respectfully presents unto your Honorable Court that he is a free man of colour, that he is a native of the State of Tennessee that he resided as a free man of colour in the State of Tennessee previous to the first day of January A.D. 1836, theat he is still desirous of remaining in the State, because he believes that, from the character for industry, sobriety and honesty, which he thinks he has established among his numerous aquaintances in Tennessee, he can readily find employmnet by hwich he can obtain support for his family & himself...” Fine.
