Autograph Letter Signed, “Elisabeth I. Ferris Secry of ‘The Women’s Association for the Relief of the Freedman,”, 1p. quarto, July 30, 1862, Philadelphia, addressed to Capt John R. Goldsborough, U.S.N., St. Simon’s Island, Florida, and reads: “...Having been informed by Mr. John Pennington that you would take charge of the proper distribution of contribution for the benefit of the colored people on St. Simon’s Island, our association send to you through his hands a box of clothing, the invoice of which is enclosed. I am desired to express to you the gratification of the members of the Association, with the opportunity afforded them to forward the purpose of their organization through such a reliable source...” with verso being the response of Captain John R. Goldsborough, dated August 15, and reads in part: “...I recd....your kind letter...accompanied by the generous gift of the ‘Womens Association for the Relief of the Freedman’, of a box of clothing for distribution to the Colony on St. Simons Island. In behalf of these destitute contraband I return you my hearty and sincere thanks and beg that you will communicate my obligations to your Nobel & humane society of which you are the Sec. The contents of the box shall be fairly & equitalby distributed...” Fine.
