An interesting group of eight printed color steroviews of photogrphic images of various "genre scenes" involving African Americans. Most date from the 1890s and come from several puplishers, many with condescending captions. Images include "23. Watch Dat Niger Kick", "Mrs. Newlywed's New Wench Cook"," . Dreaming of the Future", "Let Me Blow", "24. How De Debil do Dey Make a Bicycle", "Playing for High Stakes" and "Three of Kind". One of the cards showing two Black men and an ox cart bears a long caption on the verso, After discussing the beauties of Florida it goes on to say: "... But in the immediate vicinity of the palaces and parks of the rich may be found the shiftless, sqalid negro with his primitive implements and his lack of ambition or indolence. There are twice as many farms operated by whites as by colored farmers, and the average size tended by the latter is only 53 acres as against 133.6 acres for those operated by white farmers." And what conclusion are we supposed to draw from this nonsense? Light soiling, a few other minor defects including a small and repaired chip to one of the comer, otherwise very good condition.
