COOPER, Samuel (1798-1876) career U.S. Army officer and, although little-known today, the highest ranking Confederate general during the American Civil War. Autograph Letter Signed, “S. Cooper” 1p. quarto (though trimmed at center fold) Army of Florida, Cedar Keys, June 5, 1842, in part: “...It has been represente that there are person residing in the settlements at Chocochatlee & other places who are in the habit of keeping on hand and disposing at sale whisky & other spirtuous liquors forbidden by teh Act of Congress regulating trade &c, in the indian country...owing to the uncertainty of results in respect to negotiations which are now being attempted with a body of Indians (Creeks) in the hammocks of the Waccasasson, it is recommended that you caution your people to be constantly on their guard...” This letter may have one sentence or several trimmed, else VG.
