COBB, Howell (1815-1868) Congressman (1843-1851) Speaker of the House (1849-1851), Secretary of the Treasury under Buchanan in 1857 and later colonel of the 16th Georgia and Confederate General. Autograph Letter Signed, “Howell Cobb” 3p. octavo, Dalton, Georgia, June 22, 1855, addressed to Georgia Governor Herschel Johnson, and reads in part: “...The prospect is even better than I expected. This District will do well. Your majority two years ago was twenty one hundred. Snce then three hundred Whigs have been added to us in part & two hundred democrats cut off from Union & I yet determine that we will carry teh District by between twenty five hundred & three thousand majority. This county is in far the worst condition of any I have been to & our friends think that they will nearly hold their own. I fear it. I saw the men you spoke of in Forsyth. It is all right & no trouble there. If Lumpking runs in the 5th it will be worth to you a thousand or more votes...” More. VG.
