Autograph Letter Signed, “J.M. Daniel”, 7th South Carolina Infantry, KIA Gettysburg, 4p. octavo, May 6, 1861, Camp Pickens, and reads in part: “...Our Regmt moved from Charleston last Thursday and is now staying at Camp Pickens, about 6 miles from Aiken towards Charleston about 3 miles from the R.R....we will stay til we are called on to do fighting. There seems to be a difference of opinion (in Camps) as to whether we can be called out of the state or not. If war should break out in another Slave State I think it would be policy for us to go, but think it doubtful whether it would be lawful to compel us, for my part I had rather fight the enemy there or in Va. or Md., than to let them come here....Dr. Sheppard who is assistant surgeon said I was very billious. He attended me very well, he & Allen D. are both assistants. The Surgeon has resigned and I am afraid A. Dozier will be surgeon as he was first appointed assistant. Sheppard does pretty well all the work and I think he would be the choice of the Regt....Clinton Plunkett called on me Saturday evening. He inquired about Wm [his brother also KIA at Gettysburg] but I could nto tell him anything...Capt Norris (Milton Norris’ son) is staying with us now...” VG.With copy of article pertaining to the deaths of both J.M. Daniel and his brother William who were both Killed in Action at Gettysburg.
