Autograph Letter Signed, “Corpl Wardlaw, L.A. W.” MWIA Chancellorsville 3-1/4p. quarto, March 11, 1861, and reads in part: “...I am here by request of the Colonel and Alex McGowan... I would not leave the island one day if I thought there would be an engagement while I was away. But now I have no idea that Fort Sumter will be attacked, and their will be no engagement unless reinforcements are attempted. The policy which the authorities are now pursuing is to starve Anderson out. New batteries are being erected everywhere along the shore and the Fort can not be reinforced unless by a land attack of 20 or 30 thousand men. I rather think shall very soon it will be given up or reinforced. (The first probable, the latter hardly possible.) All the heavy guns which are bearing on Sumter are to be removed and bear on the channel. Our camps are building a battery of their own and I worked as hard to day as I ever did...The Regt. will soon have their uniform, and will be much improved on looks....I think we have a fine set of officers...” Fine.
