GRIFFITH, Richard (1814-1862) Elected colonel of the 12th Mississippi he was promoted to brigadier general. His troops were heavily engaged at the battle of Seven Pines as part of Magruder’s division. At the battle of Savage’s Station, June 29, 1862, he was mortally wounded and died the same day in Richmond. Rare Autograph Letter Signed, “Richd. Griffith”, 3p. octavo, Head Quarters 12th Regt. Miss. Vols, C.S.A, Near Union City, June 28, 1861, addressed to his wife, it reads in part: “...you and my little ones are never forgotten - hardly for a moment...Often from 4 O’clock in the morning, until 12 midnight, I am employed without a cessation of 15 minutes, except when eating. My labors are very ardious indeed, but this I am able to endure - my health being good. Add to my toils the anxiety of mind. I am compelled to feel for the care for the care of 1000 men - the sickness among them - witnessing often their sufferings far away from home they may never see again, occasionaly a death and that perhaps an only son, may be of a widowed mother, these are things that greatly oppress me - sometimes even bringing tears from a soldier’s eye...Sickness is bad enough in our Camp, but nothing like what you learn. Three deaths have occurred in my Regiment since I have been in command. A few bad cases still remain on hand, and some may die...I have not lost a day from duty for sickness, visitors among me much, my quarters being entirely too popular for my own convienence and comfort. Sometimes it is crowded from early morrn till evening....Perhaps in another week Genl. Clark may grant a permit for me to visit you for a day or two. The Genl is now in my tent and has just retired. He visits here once a week, & spends his time in my quarters. This may create some jealousy in the 13th Regiment, but I can’t help that. My regiment is much complimented beyond all others here, ass this may be another source of envy, for which I am not accountable....Mrs. C. R. Dickson & Mrs. Hawken have been on a visit here. They return home tonight and Capt Dickson with them. By him I send you this letter...” Fine.
