A rare manuscript counter-sign issued by Lt. Col. Fletcher H. Archer commander of forces at Hardy's Bluff, [Isle of Wight Co., Va.], Oct. 9, 1861. Archer was a Mexican War veteran who commanded the Confederate forces at Hardy's Bluff on the James River. His men were diligently prepared in order to defend their position and were given the PAROLE: Big Sewell to be answered by the COUNTERSIGN: Gauley River. Signed by Adjt. B. A. Lewis to the men of the 3rd Virginia Infantry and the 5th Virginia Battalion Infantry. Holding an important post on the James River Fort Huger was eventually erected there. Both VG.
