A very rare war-date Confederate naval letter, 1p. oblong 4to., written in ink by Louis C. H. Finney adding rank as CSA Naval officer, Richmond, May 6, 1862 to Lt. Col. Fletcher Archer concerning the absence of several conscripted men who were to report for naval duty on the James River during McClellan's Peninsular campaign, reading, in part : "…the men detailed from Messers. Thomas Bunker's and Cosser's militia companies to work on Gunboats in the city have not reported here as yet for duty. I cannot account for it unless they have deserted they were to have been here on Monday [the day before]. I think it my duty to inform you of it as they are bound to serve in the army if they do not report here. We have just heard that six hundred prisoners had been captured on the peninsula [during the battle of Williamsburg there were 373 Union prisoners taken]…". Confederate naval documents are exceedingly rare and seldom come to the marketplace. This document is even more unusual since it concerns the role the CSA navy played during the Peninsula campaign. Usual folds, otherwise near fine.
