A great war-date Confederate officer's order, 1p. oblong 8vo., written in ink by Col. Harrison B. Tomlin, Zuni, [Va.], May 14, 1862, addressed to Lt. Col. Fletcher H. Archer, reading, in part: "You will proceed with your command from Zuni to Broadwater Bridge…you will guard Broadwater Bridge and…send out your cavalry videttes towards [the] James River and wait patiently in this position unless the enemy compel[s] you to fall back in which case you will fall back toward Ivor…communicate to me any demonstrations…of the enemy and will leave one company of cavalry at Zuni to vidette ppp the road towards Smithfield & Suffolk…". On May 9, 1862, Confederate forces evacuated Norfolk with the occupation of the Peninsula by McClellan. Two days later all Confederate forces were ordered to evacuate the region, but on the 14th Archer was ordered to patrol the abandoned region. VG.
