A chilling war-date Confederate surgeon's letter, 1p. 4to., written by the assistant surgeon of the 14th North Carolina, General Hospital, Smithfield, Va., April 2, 1862, to Asst. Adjt. Gen. George Garrison, reading, in part: "I…report that…I repaired to Camp Bee to see the wounded man Private [William] Chapell of Co. [I] 14th Reg. N. C. Vols. The wound I saw at a glance was mortal. It had been properly dressed…I did not have him brought to the Hospital but determined…to see him again today. I went this afternoon and found him sinking. He died…about 15 minutes after my arrival. No human aid could have saved him…". Docketing indicates that the wound was to his abdomen while independent research shows that he was stabbed during a fight with a comrade. Near fine.
