Autograph Letter Signed, “E.A. Northcutt”, 22nd Alabama Infantry, 4p. oblong quarto, July 26, 1863, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and reads in part: “...I am at this time in Walker County, Georgia, a guarding an apple orchard. I have been here four days & expect I will stay here 7 or 8 more. I am 4 miles from camp....They have cut our rations down a little although I don’t think there is any danger of perishing. As to my part I am not going to suffer much as long as I have got money...Our Captain started for hom last tuesday on furlough. Colonel Marrast is gone hom on account of health...[ Lt. Colonel John] Weedon is in command of the Regt. Lt. Evans is in command of Co. E. The health of the army is good. I hear no movements of the Yankees. I don’t hardly think they will come on us here. It is dark and gloomy time with us. All out of heart. We have gave up nearly all the states that we looked two fro our supplies. I can’t tell what we will do but if God is on our side he will provide some way but I don’t see how he can be with us for this is the wickedest place in the world and the most pride among officers and a great many of them don’t countenance a private as much as you would a dog and instead of them encouraging us they generally curse us. I don’t wonder at men deserting as long as I can keep from perishing I will stick to them and if I should be spared to get through alive then I can go home with a clear conscience...I dreamed last night that the war closed and we gained our independence...” VG.
