Autograph Letter Signed by John Nathaniel Peed, 9th Virginia Cavalry, 2p. quarto, pencil, Culpepper Court House, August 7, 1863, he writes in part: “...Our Brigade is camped at Culpepper Court House it is said to recruit...We had another fight on the 4 August near Brandy Station. Our sharpshooters attacked the Yankees they drove us back about half a mile at first. We took our stand fought for a while & drove them back. Jim & myself were both in it. It was the first time Jim had ever been sharpshooting, his horse got slightly wounded but not enought to stop from duty. Joe Spilman had his horse killed. There was not any men lost on either side, nothing but sharpshooters engaged. The Yankees are still on this side of the river they are repairing the Rappahannock Bridge. The supposition up here is that the Yankees are going to attempt to cross the Rappahannock at three different points so as to divide our army. But my opinion is they may cross at any point they want & Lee will whip them. Large numbers of our army is deserting. Gen. Jenkins cavalry brigade half has left tonight before last 100 left & I heard that 7000 of Ewells has deserted. Times is very hard with us at this time...I would not sell the colt nor the cattle for this Confederate money is no use in the world. It takes from three to four dollars to buy one meal of victuals up here...” VG.
