Autograph Letter Signed, Samuel of Major Robinson’s Battalion Reserve Artillery, 2p. quarto pencil, November 30, 1863, In Camp Dalton, Georgia, with original cover sent through the Confederate postal service, it reads in part: “...we arrived at this place, the first permanent halt made since our retreat began at Lookout Mountain...I was ordered on Tuesday last with Sengtack’s Battery to report to Bragg’s Hd Qrs on Missionary Ridge...Here we reported to Maj. RobertsonComdg a Battalion of Arty. composed of Loundon’s Ala, & two Ga. batteries. Majr. R. consolidated Sengstacks with a Mo. battery, Captain Barret who gavee us a section (of which I command one piece) This Battalion being in reserve was among the first to retreat, but was halted...to protec the crossing of our rear. After 12 at night we had several alarms by the pickets firing in the swamp 1/2 of a mile wide where we expected the enemy to cross. There we waited an hour or two in fearful suspense least we should be surprised & our guns captured...again began our retreat...arrived at Chickhominy, Ga. Depot, here we saw fearful destruction of Public Property in the way of several thousand bushesl of corn emptied on the ground, extra wagon being burned etc. etc. Although our loss in that way was less than I expected to see. The roads for several miles was completely blocked up by Artillery & wgon trains so much so that it occurred to me, a few thousand Yankee cavalry could have captured & burned the whole...This army wants a Genl. who will advance sometimes instead of retreating as a rule everytime the enemy looks formidable...” Fine.
