A 2pp. 4to., ink inscribed letter date lined: Camp 18th Ala. Rgt., Allisona, Tenn., May 18, 1863 to his wife, reading, in part: "…We have just learned that our army was drawn up in line of battle in front of the enemy and that Gen. Bragg had ordered that all travel on the N&C R.R. This looks a little like a fight…it is 20 miles from our line of battle as I understand it to Tullahoma, which will make Bragg's army…40 miles from us…it is…common for this army to be drawn up in line of battle without fighting…Gen. Churchill's brigade will receive our brigade in a few days…Churchill's brigade has just been exchanged…the Yankees have taken Jackson, Miss. I was not surprised to hear this sad news. It seems that we will have to give up Miss. at last…I cannot think the Yankees will be able to hold Jackson long. I am a little uneasy about the prize I have in that part of the world. It was too hard to get to be given up so soon. I wrote to Pa yesterday and told him to send for you if he heard of the Yanks getting near Macon. You must not wait for him to send for you if they get near you. You had better take the family to Pa's. I have commenced taking a bath every morning…[the] Elk river is a beautiful stream for that purpose…write soon to your Simon…". VG
