Autograph Letter Signed by John Nathaneil Peed, 9th Virginia Cavalry, 2p. quarto, pencil, Camp Chappals Farm, Dinwiddie County, Virginia, November 11, 1864, and reads in part: “...I shall not have time to write much as the boys are going to leave in two hours and its now late in the evening. Our Regt. has just gotten in off picket of three days...just before we left our post the enemy threw out a scouting party at Ream’s Station about 8 oclock & drove our pickets off post & then returned without doing any damage. The interval between our lines & the enemy at this point is about 1 1/2 miles, the scouts report this morning that they had advanced their lines last night 1/2 mile but there is nothing like a fight as I know of. Everything seems to be quiet both here & in the valley. The Election seems to be the topic. Report says McClellan is elected carried New York by 40,000 majority. I suppose you have heard from Uncle John...he was with him [cousin Tom] which stated he was with him in the 2nd Va. Battalion Reserves...” About VG.
