Autograph Letter Signed by John N. Peed, 9th Virginia Cavalry, 2p. octavo, pencil, Near Gainesmill Hanover, June 2, 1864, and reads in part: “...I know you have spent a good deal of uneasiness & think very hard of me for not writing before this but assure you it is the first chance I have had since this fight has been going on. Several of our company went home last week & some the week before. They left unknowing to me & are what we call flanked home without leave. We have had the hardest fight we know in the month of May. Old Grant has changed his base three times & now has landed on the Chickahominy. I think Grant holds the same position McClellan held on the Peninsula & Lee his same old position...In my opinion, Lee has got Grant just where he wants him on ground that he has fought over & whipped one of the best generals that ever commanded...Our division has been fighting nearly every day. Our Brigade was in it hotly yesterday, near advanced after the fighting...Gen. Hampston came up with his Div. & succeded in driving them back near Hanover Court House. Our Regt. lost a good many killed & wounded, none from our company. I have been out all the time & in every engagement that the Regt. has been in & escaped unhurt...John” Good.
