MORGAN, John Hunt(1825-1864) Soldier; born in Huntsville, Ala. He had fought as a volunteer in the Mexican War and then, as a businessman in Lexington, Ky., he supported a militia group. When the Civil War broke out, he sided with the Confederacy; made a captain, he was assigned a cavalry scouting unit; bold and energetic, he led three daring penetrations from 1862 to 1863, disrupting Union communications in Tennessee and Kentucky and tying down large enemy forces with his relatively small units. Captured during a fourth raid, into Indiana and Ohio in July 1863, Morgan escaped from a federal penitentiary in November and resumed his raiding career. Federal forces surprised and killed Morgan in Greenville, Tenn., the following year. Pair of Manuscript Resolutions sent to John Hunt Morgan and endoresed as “Answered” followed by the date on the verso in his hand. Includes: Manuscript Document Signed, 1p. folio, January 8, 1864, House of Delegates, and reads “The House of Delegates of Virginia, learning of the arrival in this City of Brigadier General John H. Morgan, and being desirous in some manner of showing their appreciation of his gallantry and distinguished services. Resolved, That he be invited to take a seat of privilege on the floor of the House of Delegates. Resolved, That the Speaker be requested to communicate to General Morgan teh passage of the foregoing Resolution...“ With ALS by Hugh W. Sheffey Speaker of the House of Delegates, at bottom, and reads: “I have the honor to communicate to you the foregoing resolution this day adopted by the House of Delegates of Virginia. None of the heroes of this war will be more cordially welcomed to the Hall of the House than yourself and you will find there those who will rejoice to honor him to whom a wicked enemy has in vain sought to affix the badge of dishonor...” VG...plus; Autograph Letter Signed, “Shelton C. Davis” 1p. quarto, January 8, 1864, and reads “Resolved, That a Committee of three be appointed to tender to Genl. John H. Morgan a seat in teh Senate Chamber to be occupied at his pleasure, during his sojourn in the city of Richmond...” Fine.
