A good war-date Confederate soldier's 4pp. 8vo., letter written in pencil by Sgt. John C. Cox, Co. H, 11th Miss. Cavalry, Marietta, Ga., June 14, 1864 to his wife concerning his regiment's role in the Atlanta campaign, reading, in part: "…the cannons has been firing up and down the lines for the last…three days. The Yankees will [have to] force their way through our lines as they cannot flank us. If they undertake to do that…(Gen.) Johnston will whip them…as soon as the fight is over…we will return to Miss[issippi]…Gadi Herron was killed a few days ago in a fight with the Yankees…he was popular as a captain…there is neither corn or meal in this part of Georgia. I do not see how the people…live as the army destroys everything…they pass…I received my boots by Col. Muldrow…if we can only keep the Yankees out of the country. Your idea of giving the negroes their allowance for three months in case the government…[im]press[es] the meat…is a very good one. You must feed the negroes as they will steal all our hogs…only give two months allowance…do not say anything about how you are managing it…". Original transmittal envelope included. Very good.
