Broadside, 3-1/2”x5-1/2”, “Reporter. Extra.” Tyler, Texas, May 26, 1864, relaying news transmitted from Shreveport, and reads in part: “...Grant has been defeated in Virginia, and is falling back to Washington City; but says Richmond will yet be his by the 1st of June...Rumor says that Gen. Taylor has captured four transports, two gunboats and 3,000 prisoners. Grant made a speech to his army, stating that he did not fall back because he was whipped, but because he did not have force enough to capture Richmond. That he called for 100,000 men, and that they were coming and Richmond would be his by the 1st of June. Shelby captured, in a recent fight in Arkansas, 26 wagons, and killed, wounded and captured many men, mostly negroes...” Fine.
