Broadside, “Report. Extra.” 3-3/4”x12-1/2”, Tyler, Texas, May 20, 1864, transmitting news from Shreveport and Houston, in part: “...An extra from Woodville, Miss. has just reached here, giving an account of two days fighting in Virginia on the 5th and 6th inst., in which success had crowned our arms to the close of the 6th. The battle is called the Battle of the Wilderness and was fought near the Rapidan. Ewell and Hill had the brunt of the battle to bear on the first day - Longstreet on the next. Gen. Longstreet is reported severly wounded. Gens. Jenkins and Jones killed. Gen. Stafford mortally wounded. General Lee in his official dispatch to Richmond of the first days fight says, through the assistance of Almighty God, we have again achieved a victory over our enemy, but have to mourn the loss of many brave officers and men. The enemy are advancing by the way of Jamees River, and a portion of their force had reached the Chickahominy...Banks has evacuated Alexandria and burnt the place, making his way for the Mississippi. His fleet got away. This is official. Taylor will pursue him closely, and cut up Banks’ army considerably before he reaches the Mississippi...” Fine.
