Autograph Poem Signed, “Capt. J. Blythe Allston Co. ‘F’ 27th Regt. S.C. Infty” 1p. quarto, “Written after the surrender of Genl. Lee, Apl. 10th 1865 by a ‘Veteran’ of the Army of Northern Virginia, includes a 10 stanza poem titled “Stack Arms” and reads in small part: “...Scarce seven hundred men they stand/In tattered rude array/ The remnant of that gallant band,/Who erst while held the sea girl strand/Of Morris Isle with iron hand/ Gainst Yankee’s hatred sway/ Secessionville their banners claim,/And Sumter held mid smoke & flame/And the dark battle on the stream of Pocotaligo/And Walthall’s Junction, hard carved fight/ And Drewry’s Bluff’s embattled height/Whence at the grey dawn of the light/They rushed upon the foe...On o’er the dying and the dead/O’er mangled limb and gory head/ With martial look & martial tread/ March ‘Hagood’s men’ to bloody bed...Ah Carolina! Well the tear/May dew they cheeck, thy clasped hands rear/In passion o’er the tombless bier/Thy fallen chivalry/ Molony, mirror of the brave/And Sellers lie in glorious grave/ No prouder fate than they who gave/ Their life for Liberty...” Older paper repairs, else VG.
