DAVIS, Jefferson (1808-1889) Confederate States President 1861-65. Indicted for treason in May, 1865, the indictment was dropped in 1868. An amnesty bill for Jefferson Davis was signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. Autograph Letter Signed, 1-1/2pp. octavo, np., Aug 2, 1876, to Dr. M. Davis. The letter concerns an invention which is related to postage stamps, and which Jefferson Davis hopes can make money for the investor, for himself and for another person, presumably his correspondent, who would promote it: "Enclosed please find the papers in regard to the Postage stamps. You will see that the Inventor offers carte blanche as to terms, & I though he should have half and any one who would take the invention in hand and push it through should divide with me the other half. The inventor is a friend of mine and I am unwilling to think less of his invention that he does, but to not expect as much as I wish -- As ever...Jefferson Davis." At this time Davis was very much interested in enterprises which could help to restore his finances, shattered by the war and then damaged again in the 1870's by Davis' involvement with an insurance company which was doomed to failure. An interesting and unusual topic for a Jefferson Davis letter. Fine.
