A rare post-war printed 5" x 3" advertising card for the Staunton Female Seminary, Staunton, Va., 1878. A finely illustrated view of the seminary building graces the top of the card while boasting, in part: "Session opens Sept. 5, 1878. its corps of teachers including MRS. J.E.B. STUART COMPETENT AND KIND. This school is noted for its opposition to extravagance…TERMS: $210 per scholastic year…". After her husband's death in 1864 Flora Cooke Stuart supported herself and family as a teacher. Eventually, she became the headmistress of the Staunton Female Seminary, and in 1907 the seminary was renamed Stuart Hall in honor of her late husband. Never remarrying she died a widow on May 10, 1923 and is now buried alongside the gallant cavalry commander. A great association piece! Some spotting, else very good.
