BURNSIDE, Ambrose (1824-1881). West Pointer, Union general, Commander of the Army of the Potomac for some two months. He botched the assault at the Crater. Autograph Letter Signed, “A.E. Burnside” 1-1/2p. octavo, Annapolis, April 13, 1846, addressed to Surgeon H.W. Rines, and reads in part: “...I have been intending to write you for a long time, but have been waiting in the hope that I might be able to say something to you of a definite nature in relation to the transfer of the old 3rd Div. back to the Corps. It is now settled, taht it will not be done at once, but we will meet within a short time, when the transfer will be made without draft...” VG.
