Autograph Letter Signed, “Charles H. Mendell” died of disease September 19, 1864, in Newbern, North Carolina, 4p. octavo, Annapolis, November 21, 1861, We all arrived in safety although there were some narrow escapes. One young man, fond of the bottle, took a drink from a stranger in Perryville and came near losing his life. The liquor was poisoned. Another young man was knocked from the cars while at full speed by coming in contact with a bridge. We expected he was killed but strange to say he escaped with only a few slight bruises...There are many temptations to one in camp which are not felt by those at home. I find one of the hardest of these to me is to resist a game of cards...There was always a fascination about the game which has bound me for hours night after night. Many are the nights I have slept but little. I would rather play cards than sleep and now on a stormy day or eve when most all around me are engaged in it and many asking me to play, there are times when it comes hard to say no. But I thank God he has given me strength to say that little word and I feel he always will...” Fine.
