HUMPHREYS, Andrew Atkinson (1810-1883) Aide to McClellan 1861. Promoted Brig. Genl. April ,1862, and served as chief topographical engineer of the Army of the Potomac during the Peninsular campaign. Made Major General after his brilliant efforts resisting Hood and McLaws at Gettysburg. Later chief of staff to General Meade. Commanded the II Corps until the surrender of the ANV at Appomattox.Autograph Letter Signed, “A.A. Humphreys” 1p. 4-1/4”x5-1/2”, October 31, 1879, addressed to Col. Nicholson, and reads “As I shall not be able to offer my congratulations in person on the 6th Nov. next I now do so most sincerely, by note, with my earnest wishes for your happiness...” Fine.
