PARROTT, Enoch Greenleafe (1815-1879) Naval officer, who saw service in the African Squadron, the MExican War, the evacuation of the Norfolk naval yard and the Civil War. Autograph Letter Signed, “E.G. Parrott”, 4p. quarto, Washington, D.C., January 9, 1861, and reads in part: “...I am very much gratified taht you did not vote the Republican ticket and that Mrs. Parrott did not also. These sectional parties, whith their sectional feelings & sectional hate have brought our country to the very verge of ruin. I do not see any way out of the difficulties but I still hope some way will be found taht will satisfy the majority of the states, at least. The most important movement, at present, is the effort to make Virginia & Maryland join the seceeding states. If they do so, the chances are very great, that an attempt will be made to prevent, by force, the inauguration of Lincoln, at Washington and then civil war commences. Matters are very much complicated, for instance, many of the union people in these two states think that if their states should join in the secession movement, the reult will be ultimately in favor of union, because then the front presented by the southern states will be so formidable, that the north will give them the guarantees they want. But I think this is a mistake and that the inevitable result will be war, if both these states go out. Of the two, it is more important that Maryland should not go out, as Washington is in that state...I think the cause of our troubles is the anti-slavery party at the north, but I also think that the south, are now putting themselves in the wrong, & will especially do so, if they attempt to oppose, by force, the inauguration of Lincoln...” Much more. Fine.
